New Yorker Mishka Shubaly’s latest LP was two years in the making. Worth the wait.

“With a little help from my friends, ‘When We Were Animals’ became a weary, ferocious record about pining for and hating your past, a record about yearning for and fearing change, a record about burning for life and aching for death” he says in the blurb. Those contradictions are writ large throughout. It’s a difficult listen at times, but rewarding.
