I sometimes wonder if the world will ever be treated to the same feelings of joy and wonder I felt in my late teens and early adulthood when discovering new bands. One listen at what constitutes ‘the charts’ only serves to confirm my worst fears.
And then I get pointed in the direction of something that gives hope. One such example is Brighton-based Stranger Girl, whose track ‘Thinking Down’ is available now via Spotify and iTunes. Perhaps more reminiscent of this century in terms of production their songwriting is, on this evidence, timeless in the same way that such bands as Alvvays and the previously-BoL-reviewed National Honour Society take what is best from alternative music history and produce something meaningful for now. You won’t see Stranger Girl on Top of the Pops, but you can hear them between your ears and that can only be a good thing.
