Hazel Winter combines with Michael McNeil, aka The Commander, in this very British band with a bloody terrific album out now.

Winter’s songwriting is well known. Ex of the Blue Aeroplanes, she’s established as one of Bristol’s finest. McNeil – who says in a press release that he asked Winter to join his band because “she has a car” – shows similar promise. On the album Courtesan, McNeil sings on three tracks, definitely the more punk of the selection, whereas those with Winter taking the lead tend to be more self-searching, soul-baring exercises. A combination of blues, punk, folk, poetry, sarcasm, piss-taking in that way that few bands beyond these isles can manage to pull off.
