What would you do for your first release for a new label? We’d go for an eight-and-a-half minute epic to really announce ourselves. Happily, so would The Orielles.
The Halifax (not that one, the Canadian one) three-piece have recently signed to Heavenly – a badge of quality if ever there was one. For over eight minutes, Sugar Tastes Like Salt pulls off a great trick in feeling like it’s about three minutes shorter than that. It switches about with great ease – there are elements of ska, dance, post-punk and funk in and among – and is never less than attention-grabbing. Astonishing work and ambition that can only be applauded.
